His mentorship and engagement with contemporary issues make him a beloved figure among young Islamic scholars and professionals across the globe.

Early Life and Family Legacy

Born on April 2nd, 1959, in Gujarat, India, Shaykh Amin comes from a deeply scholarly and spiritually enriched family. His father, Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā Musa ibn Ibrahim Kholwadia, was a spiritual disciple of the eminent Shaykh al-Islām Ḥusayn Ahmad al-Madanī. His father’s dedication to sacred knowledge and tireless service to the Islamic community played a significant role in shaping Shaykh Amin's academic and spiritual journey.

Shaykh Amin's family maintained a strong connection with revered scholars, including Qārī Muḥammad Ṭayyib al-Qāsimī and Mawlānā Masīḥ Allāh Khān al-Shirwānī. This environment of intellectualism and spiritual rigor fostered Shaykh Amin’s early desire for Islamic scholarship and laid the foundation for his later achievements.

Formal Islamic Education and Spiritual Path

Shaykh Amin's Islamic education began shortly after completing his O-levels in Gloucester, England. In 1975, at the age of 16, he traveled to Gujarat, India, where he completed the memorization of the Qur'an in the village of Taraj. His pursuit of higher Islamic education led him to Bangalore, where he was initiated into the Akbarī path of Islamic spirituality under the tutelage of Mawlānā Muḥammad Mīrān. It was here that Shaykh Amin delved into the works of great Islamic philosophers and mystics such as Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī, Muḥy al-Dīn Ibn ʿArabī, and ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Shaʿrānī.

He later pursued advanced Islamic studies in Karachi at the Jāmiʿat al-ʿUlūm al-Islāmiyyah in Binnori Town, where his intellectual prowess allowed him to condense several years of study into a short period. He studied Ḥanafī jurisprudence (fiqh) with Dr. ʿAbd al-Razzāq Iskandar and Tafsīr al-Jalālayn with Mawlānā Idrīs Mīrathī. His studies culminated in Deoband, where he studied under esteemed scholars such as Muftī Saʿīd Aḥmad al-Pālanpūrī, Mawlānā Muḥammad Naʿīm, and Mawlānā Anẓar Shāh al-Kashmīrī.

Throughout his studies, Shaykh Amin sought spiritual and academic enlightenment from a wide range of scholars and was fortunate to receive ijāzah (certification) in hadith from Qārī Muḥammad Ṭayyib al-Qāsimī, the grandson of the founder of Dār al-ʿUlūm, Deoband. His intellectual journey also included advanced training in iftāʾ (issuing legal verdicts) under Qāḍī Mujāhid al-Islām al-Qāsimī, an experience that cemented his expertise in Islamic legal theory and practice.

Career and Contributions to Islamic Scholarship

After completing his studies, Shaykh Amin relocated to the United States, settling in Chicago in 1984. His early career involved work as a professional translator and book reviewer, but it wasn’t long before he emerged as a leading Islamic scholar in the region. In 1998, he founded Darul Qasim, an Islamic institution dedicated to advanced studies in Islamic sciences. The institute has become a beacon for students seeking a traditional Islamic education in the West, offering rigorous training in theology, jurisprudence, and philosophy.

Shaykh Amin’s scholarly contributions extend to various fields, including Islamic finance, where he co-authored the book Islamic Finance: What it is and What it Could Be. He also translated Muftī Muḥammad Taqī Usmānī’s Taqlīd kī Sharʿī Ḥaythiyyat into English, titled The Legal Status of Following a Madhab. His work in Qur'anic exegesis, particularly his book A Spark From the Dynamo of Prophethood, has also earned him recognition.

One of Shaykh Amin’s most significant contributions is his work in Islamic bioethics. He has published extensively on the ethical implications of medical and scientific advancements within the framework of Islamic law, including articles on the juristic role of physicians and the bioethical assessment of vaccines. His works have been featured in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics and in books like Islam and Bioethics.
