Hashim U. Ali is a writer and researcher specialising in classical Islamic studies and the intersection of Islamic law, governance, and modern social structures. Grounded in traditional scholarship and modern academia, he holds a First-Class Honours BA in Islamic Studies and Arabic from Markfield, where he received the Rehmat Ali Memorial Excellence Award, alongside an MSc in Social Anthropology from the LSE and data/econ. training from MITx.
His traditional education includes intensive study under prominent contemporary authorities across the UK and abroad. He holds connected ijazat in the primary Qurʼanic recitation riwayat (Hafs, Shuʼbah, and Warsh), major canonical hadith collections, and specialised texts in topics like political jurisprudence (Siyāsah Sharʼiyyah).
His forthcoming publication will be in Wiley-Blackwell’s first handbook on Islamic liberation theology as a chapter on Fitna as a catalyst for Tajdid and Islah. He has written in different media outlets and taught extracurricular islamic studies and textual studies at various seminaries and universities. His research interests bridge classical Islamic legal & political theory, liberation theology, secularism, decolonial thought, and empirical social science.
