Mastering Modern Arabic

About

Mastering Modern Arabic is a two-semester programme designed to equip students with practical fluency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) for everyday life, workplace communication, media engagement, and travel. Delivered entirely online, the course combines structured grammar, practical vocabulary, and real-life conversation drills to help learners gain confidence in speaking and understanding Arabic.

Students will develop the four core language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—through interactive lessons, roleplays, and exposure to contemporary Arabic texts and media. Alongside this, they will strengthen their grammar and sentence-building skills using materials from Teach Yourself Arabic and Mastering Arabic Grammar, supplemented with additional instructor-selected resources.

This course is taught by qualified Muslim scholars and language specialists who combine traditional pedagogy with modern teaching methods, ensuring that learners gain both accuracy and fluency. By the end of the programme, students will be able to engage in basic conversations, understand common workplace and travel vocabulary, and build a strong foundation for advanced Arabic study, whether in classical Islamic texts or modern dialects.

Note: This is a two-semester programme (Level 1 & Level 2). All students begin with Semester 1, and progression to Semester 2 follows automatically upon completion.

Course Overview

This two-semester Modern Standard Arabic course is designed for beginners who can already read the Arabic script or recite Qur’an and now wish to understand and speak the language in practical, modern contexts. Spanning 30 weeks of structured learning and 60 hours of live instruction, the course offers a strong balance between reading, comprehension, grammar, and conversational practice.

Students will gradually build fluency through authentic texts, dialogues, and practical topics such as family, daily life, travel, and culture, while also developing confidence in sentence structure, verb conjugation, and pronunciation.

The course is ideal for university students preparing for study, internships, or career opportunities in Arab countries; professionals already working in or relocating to the Gulf who need workplace and social Arabic; and individuals seeking to engage with Arabic in media, travel, or daily life contexts.

Lessons are delivered in small group settings to ensure interactive participation, individual attention, and real-time feedback from instructors trained in both traditional and modern methods of Arabic pedagogy.

By the end of the programme, students will be able to read and understand simple Arabic texts, construct accurate sentences, and engage in basic conversations, while also building a foundation for further study in classical Arabic, dialects, or advanced Modern Standard Arabic.

This course is not suitable for absolute beginners who cannot yet read the Arabic alphabet, or for learners focused exclusively on classical Arabic/Qur’anic studies.

I think I’m at an advanced level as I have completed it partially in the past. What is the way forward?

If you have prior experience in Arabic studies, you are required to enroll directly in our Level 1 course, Insha'Allah. After enrollment, our team will arrange an Arabic proficiency assessment with our instructor. Based on the results, Ustadh will recommend the appropriate classes for your level.

How long does it take for an advanced student to receive a decision on which level will be offered?

The final decision on which level will be offered, based on your assessment and prior study record, can take 1 - 2 weeks to complete due to the high influx of students during last week of registration. Therefore, we encourage all advanced students to complete enrollment as soon as possible to ensure a timely process of your advanced classes allocation.

The timings listed on the website are primarily for beginner-level classes. Advanced students' class timings may vary and can be scheduled anywhere from 9am to 9pm UK time . Apologetically No. Students must remain in their designated track, either Weekend or Weekday, and are not permitted to mix classes between the two tracks. However, it is possible to switch tracks entirely, meaning a student who initially enrolled in the weekday track but wishes to shift to the weekend track can do so. However, such a shift must be done as soon as possible. Additionally, students should be aware of the starting months for each track:
