Course Overview

Islam and its role in politics is a heavily debated topic. Islam and Politics is a unique, comprehensive online course that imparts a fundamental understanding of the development in role of Islam in plethora of different political, social, economic and ideational settings across the breadth of the Muslim nations and Muslim governances. It provides a comparative analysis of varied manifestations of Islamist politics, trends in Islam as a significant force, and ideas in classical and contemporary Islamic political thought. It devises a critical approach to the study of Islamic politics and helps learners evaluate the ideas, beliefs, perceptions and convictions of both Muslim and non-Muslim political thinkers. It includes a briefing from thought-leaders on the relationship between Islam and politics to facilitate a thorough understanding of proposed theories, assumptions, and controversial and challenging contemporary issues.

The course unveils a set of interlocking theories, assumptions and paradoxes integral to understanding Islamist political dynamism. It provides students with a clear understanding of the critique of western and non-western governances in relationship with the challenge of political Islam.

Course Format

This unique course covers varied aspects of Islam and Politics. It is a Level 1 course, and the higher levels are in-progress for advanced students. There will be three levels, each consisting of a total of 10 to 20 sessions. This Level 1 course will, Insha Allah, be completed in 6 months. This course consists of 15 to 16 live online interactive sessions, pre-recorded videos, online course material and engaging learning activities including online assessments and practical assignments. It is an online, part-time course that offers flexibility to study while maintaining work and personal commitments. It comprises the following components:
Live Online Sessions:
There will be 10 to 12 live online lectures which will be delivered on weekends. Each session will be 90-120 minutes long. The instructors will deliver online interactive lectures on the subject. Students are encouraged to discuss cases, ask questions and raise important points for feedback during online sessions. Discussions are a key component of the learning process, and the more you can engage with the instructor, the more productive and enjoyable your learning will become. In case you miss the live session, you can still learn by watching the recordings via your personalised “myAlbalagh” account at your convenience. The video recordings will be uploaded on ‘My AlBalagh’ within 48 to 72 hours after the live session.
Online Course Material:
This course material includes articles, cases, scenarios with questions and pre-recorded videos. You can review, print, read the course material during the course and use the discussion board to ask questions related to the course content. The course material will be released on “myAlbalagh”, and every student will get 24/7 access to it. You can get access to online learning portal from desktop, laptops and even mobile devices. You can also download our mobile app, which is compatible with android and IOS devices, to get access to the course material from anywhere, anytime.

Online activities include optional assessments, practical assignments and some question exercise to help you revise, reflect and gain a clear understanding of the subject. Successful completion of online assessments will gain you an achievement certificate.

Learning Objectives

The Aim Of This Course Is:

  • To delve into renewed analysis and fundamental understanding of Islam and politics. With past, current and feasible future of Islamic politics, Islamism and politics based on classical and modern literature available on Islam and politics, adhering to the divine and immutable nominatives system (Shari`a), the Qur’an and Sunnah (traditions of the Prophet) and Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh).
  • To discuss, analyse and decode political discourses, movements, ideologies, views, assumptions, conceptions as put forward by the prominent, classical and contemporary Islamist leaders, political activists, Islamism scholars, liberals, and socialists.
  • To critically evaluate controversies, issues about political Islam, western imperialism, authoritarian regimes, malleable, cultural conservatism, and democratic political system.

After Successful Completion Of This Course, Students Will:

  • Understand and analyse the key evolutionary, classical and contemporary concepts, conflicts, discourses, arguments, issues, scenarios concerning Islam and politics.
  • Identify, explore, and evaluate the cultural, intellectual, philosophical traces, traits of Islamic thought, political movements, doctrine and the influence of Islam upon politics, particularly upon the of Muslim nations or governance.
  • Gain knowledge of the theoretical, practical and methodological approaches, and critically examine the interplay or juxtaposition of Islamic culture, tradition and contemporary global politics.
  • Develop feasible solutions for numerous global political challenges which are currently confronting the Muslim nations and societies, comprising democracy, freedom, political rights, equality, social justice, and civil rights.
  • Critically analyse the varied manifestations of the Islamist radicalism, ideological tenets, and the conceptual forces of Islamic reformism, socialism, revisionism, progressivism and the ways to root out problems which impede and spread the implementation of the Islamic governance as a major force in politics.
  • Deconstruct and demystify false westernised portrayal of Islamist political governance, fundamentalism, Islamic authoritarianism, fascism and thus, reviving the spirit of Islam in social and political rulings, and propagating Islam as ideology in legitimate political regimes.

Is it mandatory to attend live sessions?

We always encourage attending live sessions among students, but it is not compulsory for technical course progress of the students.

 

 

I missed a live session. Can I get the video recordings?

If you are unable to attend a live session or have missed it, you can view recorded sessions on your course dashboard. You can access all the completed Recordings, PPT and assessments anytime

.

 

Can I download the recordings and watch it offline?

You can download recordings and PPT of the course sessions from the myAlBalagh mobile App for all the enrolled courses.The recordings will be available for students after 48 hours of the live session.

Do I get marks for watching course recordings and presentations?

There are no additional marks for watching the course recordings. Only the module Assessments and the final exam add up to the final score.You can check the individual scores of your Assessments under the Progress tab of myAlBalagh.

I have doubts but I cannot attend the live session. Any other way to ask my questions?

You can discuss your doubts  via Course WhatsApp Group dedicated for student discussion or access the Discussion board  on myAlBalagh. It is a platform for you to ask questions, discuss and get your doubts cleared.

When will the final exam be held?

The Final Exam will be held at the end of the course and will be a graded and timed exam.
